Art Trip – Gallery COMMON

2024.06.12

On June 12, 2024 this year’s Oak Class went on their very first Art Trip for this school year! The RST Art Trips are an integral part of our Oak program and RST’s ongoing commitment to and relationship with the arts. During these trips, the students experience the work of contemporary artists, get to discuss and share their ideas about art, meet artists and those working in the arts, and create their own works inspired by what they have seen.

For the trip, they traveled to Gallery COMMON in Jingumae to see the works of American artist Jacqueline Surdell. This was an excellent first trip, as Surdell’s work combines painting and sculpture by using rope to create large scale textural works. After discussing the possible meanings behind the work and why perhaps the artist created it, we spent some time moving around the gallery and sketching our favorite works. Surdell’s work lends itself marvelously to pencil interpretations, and the Oaks did some really amazing sketches!
