Learn About: Summer School at RST

2025.06.02

Our seasonal school program is a great chance for families no already enrolled at RST let their child try learning in a student led, project-based environment.

For many families, it is hard to imagine all of the exciting things that happen each day at RST, so we’ve made this blog post help you understand our seasonal school program, such as our upcoming Summer School.

To help, below is a video showcasing our 2024 Summer School Program, showing some time from each week:

Our motto for this Summer:

Every week in our Summer School starts with discovery and exploration time! This can be 20-30 minutes for our younger children, to 45 minutes or more for our oldest students!

Discovery and exploration time includes curated experiences to introduce the theme of the week for children. This often means a lot of dress up or exploration of materials!

Instead of rote memorization, the children at RST become all kinds of things: archeologists, artists, photographers, dancers, and scuba divers!

Our week long learning often leads to the creation of wonderful art and objects, born from what the children learn together with their individual interests and ideas.

When learning about deep sea creatures for example, the children might get the idea to build an aquarium to show all the strange animals in the ocean. Creating the aquarium can lead to learning a variety of things:

What should the layout of the aquarium be? Architecture
How does the pump in an aquarium work? Engineering
Can I make a real looking giant squid? Art

When children create at RST, we’re always excited by the unexpected twists and turns that it leads the learning journey on, places we could never come up with without the children’s input.

We strive to give exciting one-of-a-kind experiences which they will never forget. That means finding novel ways for the children to learn and explore. In the past, this has meant exploring the idea of synesthesia with ambient sound synthesizers, using video cameras to create spooky movies, or filling a classroom with sand and water to make a moving ocean ecosystem. Encouraging children to make something new and unique is how you come up with things like neon night-time matsuris!

If you can encourage your child to see every day as new and full of possibilities, they will be on the right track to becoming life-long learners!

We hope this explanation sheds some light on what our program is like.
