Today the Acorn & Sprout class finished their first Big Art Project of this school year! These large canvas based works are part of our end-of-the-year Charity Art Auction which allows the children to see their work professionally displayed in a gallery whilst raising money for children’s charity. Todays work saw the children taking inspiration from their current study of food, and creating a work only using grains.

In Art Studio this May, we explored the work of Etel Adnan, a Lebanese-American poet, essayist, and visual artist. Inspired by her vibrant style, we created abstract landscapes using palette knives and collaborated on a shared accordion-style book, known as a leporello.

Last week the Acorn & Sprout class finished with their Atelier Exploration: Light, Sound, Magnet and Water Waves.

We dipped our hands in a water sensory bin with hydrophobic sand, did magnetic sand shadow drawing, had lots of sound recognizing, playing, and color mixing.

One of the most exciting parts of the RST Art Auct

One of the most exciting parts of the RST Art Auction is the unveiling of the artworks that the children make at the end of the year, and seeing all of the varied pieces together.

The art is done by the children from ages as young as 1.5 years old, and so the teachers think deeply about which materials to give the children to explore, as well as how to break down more complex ideas for some of the older children when they view artists works.

The younger students are work tends to focus more on "experiential" art, while the older students get the chance to also learn about different art styles, mediums, and artists.

In the end, though, the works should always concentrate on giving children freedom to express, play and invent.

We hope this selection of 5 works (out of the 17 larger works that were displayed this year) can show the depth of thought, creativity and experience in art which you can give even young children.
